Home
We test yearly for CAE and CL and Johnes to ensure that we are offering healthy goats from a healthy herd.
CAE and CL are common goat diseases and you must be vigilant in making sure your farm does not get either disease by purchasing your goats from farms that test for them.

We now maintain a strictly closed herd.  We were originally planning to show our goats.  We have decided we will not be showing our goats.  We do not allow does that we sell to re-breed to our bucks after they have left the farm.  Once an animal leaves our farm it cannot come back.  All newcomers to the farm must be tested for both CAE and CL and Johnes.

If we ever get other types of livestock, they will live in separate pens with separate pastures to be absolutely sure that the goats cannot catch anything from them.  It never hurts to be extra safe.

CAE, Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis, is a chronic viral disease of the joints.  It can also affect the nervous system, damage the udder and infect the lungs.  Goats can have CAE without symptoms for years, that is why it is important to purchase tested goats.

CL, Caseous Lymphadenitis, is a highly-contagious bacterial disease that causes external and internal abscesses.  Goats with CL usually die within a few years.  CL is extremely common in the meat goat industry.

Some people will tell you that CL and CAE are just "facts of life" with goats.  This is NOT TRUE! Both diseases can be prevented if you know where your goats are coming from and you buy from tested herds.  If anyone tells you that either disease is no big deal, it is likely because their goats have it.
